Jasper, Ga. (October 22, 2012) – The first 40 women who registered for the special event this Saturday, October 27 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital and the Piedmont Imaging Center will receive a free mammogram screening in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. The staff at the Piedmont Mountainside recognizes that the key to beating the disease is catching it early, usually through a regular screening (i.e., breast self-exam or screening mammogram). Consequently, they offer this screening event, which is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 27.

“It is important women get screened for breast cancer, regardless of their family history,” said Randy Haynes, imaging services manager at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. “Eighty percent of women who are diagnosed don’t have any reported risk factors, which include family history, race and ethnicity. This means that almost any woman is at risk for breast cancer, especially those over the age of 40.”

Located at 1266 Hwy 515 South in Jasper, Piedmont Mountainside offers additional mammogram appointments Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. using state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment that makes screening easy, providing faster image results with lower radiation doses and improved patient comfort. Those interested in participating in this special event can also make a mammogram screening appointment with the Piedmont Imaging Center, located at 309 Highland Parkway in East Ellijay.
To schedule a mammogram, call 706-301-5401. No physician referral is required. Patients should bring a picture I.D. with them to their appointment. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted prior to the exam.
